Just Showing Up

Working out was never hard nor seemed laborious for me. I played sports. It was just something that had to be done in order to perform at my best for competition. Food, on the other hand, took a lot of learning and refining. I went to my first CrossFit seminar in early 2012. I remember them saying things like “Bread is bad. You shouldn’t be eating tortillas, rice or beans. Cereal with milk is possibly the worst thing for you.” As a 21 year old who grew up in a big Mexican family this was like hearing the sky actually isn’t blue. It completely turned my world of eating upside down. I had the same thought as most of y’all when I first heard it, “Well, then what do I eat?” They also explained to me that if I wanted to really lean out (yes, even I needed to lean out) that I would have to weigh and measure my food. There was no way I was ever going to do that…until I just did. I remember when I finally decided, “That’s it, I’m doing it.” I think we as human beings often let perfect be the enemy of good. What I mean by that is one of the things that stopped me from fully jumping in the pool was the thought that I wasn’t entirely sure what I was doing. I didn’t have a mentor or coach to really guide me. I just had to do it. When I finally decided to do it I just told myself, “To hell with it, I’m just going to do it as best I can and see what happens for one month.” Of course, the results were better than expected. It had nothing to do with whether or not I was doing it perfectly, it just mattered that I was CONSISTENT. I didn’t deviate. I ate the exact same amount of food EVERY DAY. If there’s something you want to improve on, the accuracy of your efforts really shouldn’t stop you from simply doing it. Start where you are. Don’t worry about whether you’re doing it perfectly or not. Just start doing something and do it the same way every day for 30 days. You’ll be shocked with the results.
